We're on the road again

We left Shayna’s lake cabin on Monday, August 19th with See-More pointed to the east.  Our goal was to make it to Sault Ste Marie for an overnight stay.

The drive through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was a delight to the eyes with many glimpses of the lake.  Shouldered along the highway were pines, aspens, birch and maples that were offering a preview of their coming attractions.

The roadsides were a floral Morse code with dots of white flowers followed by dashes of brown cattails.  Mixed into this message were sprinkles of red and orange amidst splashes of yellow blooms.  The smell of autumn was in the air.

As we passed the land of Da Yoopers we hoped to find a little shop selling pasties that we could have for lunch.  We like to take in whatever local delicacy the area has to offer.  But we didn’t spot any so lunch was created on the fly by the Queen herself.  George and Gracie declined lunch as they continued to hide down the rabbit hole (behind the couch).

I had hoped to insert a selection from Da Yoopers for those who might not be familiar with their music.  Hopefully when I attempt to post this there will be enough internet strength to pull in a You Tube video for you.

It worked!  Praise the Hot Spot!  I have not reviewed this video since our internet is so poor, but hopefully there is nothing offensive in this selection.  If there is...my bad.

About six o’clock we pulled into the Kewadin Casino in Sault Ste Marie.  There was a handwritten note on the first trailer instructing us to go into the casino and get a player’s card, then return to the trailer and ask for Jack and he would give us a free night’s stay.  Our neighbors told me that Jack’s wife had had a heart attack and he wasn’t around right now, so we decided to just set up and leave in the morning without jumping through all the hoops for what would be a free stay anyway.  It’s not a large RV park but it has nice sites with grass and electric hookups, perfect for an overnight stay.

The plan for today is to have a leisurely breakfast and then capture the cats after they’ve eaten and used their litter box to crate them up for the border crossing.  I hope they decide to just accept the travel part and learn to sleep on the bed or couch during transit like our old cats did.  But they’ve already adjusted to a great deal in their three months with us, so I imagine it will take some more time to develop that level of trust.  I’m pleased that they seem to shake it off and relax once we’ve set up camp.
Long Live the Queen of Da Yoopers

  2. I must say that you have a most wonderful way of describing the scenery. I could picture it all in my mind. Wow, just beautiful! I agree, your kitties have had a lot of adjusting to do, and have done quite well. Your video is quite humorous. I'll have to tell Mac and Audrey to stop by and have a look at it. They are the hunters in the family and will enjoy it so. Now I have to tend to the dishes in the kitchen sink. You have a wonderful day, hugs, Edna B.

  3. We were watching one of our favourite shows on TV last night, American Pickers, and they were travelling through Michigan. I presume it was the same area that you have just travelled through, and they talked about the "Yoopers" and even went and bought pasties for their lunch. It was great to see the area you so beautifully described. They even complained of having no reception for their cell phone and how isolated they felt.

Pasties here in Australia are a great lunchtime snack. I'm not sure whether Mike, one of the pickers, enjoyed his.....lol.

Happy travelling and look forward to reading about your next adventure.
