The Invention of Wings

My friend, McGuffy Ann, recommended this book on her blog and it certainly delivered.

It's written by Sue Monk Kidd (the author of The Secret Life of Bees) and her writing is suburb.

The kind of writing you don't want to skim over, but rather savor each finely crafted turn of words.

The story takes place in Charleston SC back in the days of slavery, or as they referred to it then, the peculiar institution.

It is based largely on fact and features the Grimke sisters from Charleston, two active abolitionists who came from a family of slave owners.  Rather than succumbing to this style of life, they revolted against it at great personal loss.

The narration goes from the viewpoint of the daughter and then from the slave girl, offering a unique insight into the thought process of each.

It was a fast read since I couldn't seem to put it down very often and their bravery impressed me.  I'd like to think I would be capable of such actions, but you don't know until you're in the mix of it.

Long Live the Queen of Reads-a-Lot

  1. Great review, my friend. Sue Monk Kidd is indeed a great author.
I am currently reading Lori Roy's upcoming novel: "Let Me Die in His Footsteps". It is another Southern Gothic. Oh my gosh...it is awesome! She is exceptional at this genre. I really think you would like Bent Road; her first.
