Interesting Toilets on the Road

Texas has an abundance of city names we have encountered in other travels.

For instance, we used to live in Onalaska WI and here we find ourselves in Onalaska TX.

On our way northward I saw a sign for Moscow TX, but failed to snap a photo of it as my fingers were busy knitting baby caps.  No, I'm not pregnant...explanation to follow on this later.

Further up the road is Paris TX and we'll be stopping on the way through tomorrow to photo their Eiffel Tower. Yeah, I know...tacky.  But that's the way we roll.

But for today found us driving to Sulphur Springs TX to use the toilets there.  Huh?   Okay, even if we don't really need the facilities, I can't pass up the opportunity to visit the See-Through Public Toilets.  There's no signage - just a glass square found in the town square.  I made Left Brain go first...just to be safe.

These are constructed from one way glass.   The person inside taking care of business can view the public walking around outside, but they can't see in....pretty cool, huh?  Here's how it looks before sitting down.  Nice view of the streets and park.

This is a shot of the courthouse while seated on My Throne.  It's nice to have a room with a view.

Hey!  They said you couldn't see anything!  What's Left Brain pointing at?  I found out he did that just to freak me out...and it did!

The courthouse square is very nice, with large chess and checker sets.  All the tables have a checkerboard pattern built in and the chairs are of a wicker design and very comfy.
After goofing off in the bathrooms we went across the street to Bayou Jacks for some Cajun food.

The decor was cute, with this sign showing where the bathrooms were.  But why use these with the really fun ones across the street?

The food was delish, the service incredible and they played Zydeco music in the background.  The waiter's shirt had me a bit concerned, but we learned that Dirty Balls are an appetizer.  Well, at least that was his story.

Then it was back to the Ramblin Fever RV Park for a good night's rest before we drive northward again the next day.

  2. The town names always fascinate me. Oddly, many do repeat like that, too.
I saw that toilet on the news a while back. It is funny! I would do exactly what Left Brain did. Yep. I couldn't resist.
    Great post.

  5. I also think the town names are quite fun, but that toilet -- oh wow!! It's quite fascinating, but I'd be very uncomfortable using it. Just one rock or stick or whatever, and oh my!!!!! Unless of course, the glass is unbreakable. Still, I'd shy away from it. I must say though, one could take some pretty neat photos of passers by while seated in one of these potty houses. Hmmmmm. You have a wonderful day, hugs, Edna B.

  6. So who dreamt up the idea of one way glass cammodes ... I don't think that is a person I would want to meet ... sadistic, I would say. I think of a commode as a place to sit back and relax with a crossword puzzle or a good book. I am sure that would never happen in a one way glass version ... good things the carpenters got it right :) So I have been to Onalaska ... my friends had a house on the lake (reservoir) that is there ... Beautiful country! So it's true ... you are headed north? Going through Chicago area? If so, up for lunch? Just askin' :) We are going through the throws of winter/spring transition still, though it is supposed to improve next week. At least so the weatherman says ... we shall see. Anyway, let me know if you will be in close proximity and we can plan something ... Until then, be safe and steer clear of the Texas commodes :)

  7. I like learning about town names. That toilet is pretty strange...I'm not so sure I would use it though.

  8. Hello! I'm researching photos for an elementary school reading book on bathrooms and I'm looking for photos of bathrooms with mirrored walls like this one in Sulphur Springs. Do you have high resolution digital files of these photos? Please email me for possible licensing in the book: sweldon (at) dinardodesign (dot) com. THANKS! Sonja
