The trip to The Big Apple

Thursday:  Oct 6th

Flight to Chicago and Newark went without incident, my favorite way to travel.  The first night accommodations were at the plush Howard Johnsons.  I could tell what the room might look like from the trash decorating the yard and the missing lock on the back door from the latest robbery that eliminated our opportunity to do the laundry that night.  No need to use your room card for entry when there’s a gaping hole where the lock used to be.  The room did not disappoint my expectations.  It had a lovely red striped carpet that mostly laid flat leading to a balcony with a patio window….thank goodness for being on the fourth floor.  The walls were papered in some sort of red design that did not accommodate the bedspreads.  One wall was green for no apparent reason but was perhaps an attempt to calm the senses?  It was a bit like sleeping inside a commercial for acid reflux.  But there was no sign of bedbugs and roaches.  I imagine the constantly flashing lights on the wall kept them at bay, and as annoying as they were I was glad to have them.  Needless to say I did not look under the bed since there was no smell of decomposition.

We dined at the Tick Tock Diner down the street and enjoyed a wonderful Greek salad and spinach pie.  It was super yummy and was a great way to end the day.

Friday:  Oct 7th

Today is our … “free day” bus driver style in New York.  We walked over to the I-Hop and had the fit and healthy breakfast of turkey bacon, fake eggs and two pancakes.  It was listed as under 600 calories …or at least until I added the butter pecan syrup.   Then we found a Laundromat and read our Kindles while he caught up on his laundry.  It was a nice Laundromat with some comfy chairs and a little deli next door where I managed to find some caffeinated beverages to start out my day.  From there we did a test run to La Guardia airport since this was one he had not yet been to.  We managed to find our way there and out again and our next mission was to find a place to park a bus for four hours until they came in. While cruising about through the sea of humanity known as downtown Manhattan we watched as an ambulance tried to get through to a person lying in the street.  I’m guessing he was trying to cross the street it didn’t go well.  It’s amazing to watch bicyclists weave their way in and out of traffic.  Not an area for a casual stroll or faint of heart. We drifted about until we found an open spot big enough for us to park, which is no easy feat and we managed to sit for about an hour and half in one spot before they asked us kindly to leave.  Then we found another area to perch until the phone call came that they were in.

After picking them up at about 6:30 we managed to make it back through the Friday night traffic to the Sheraton for our next two night stay.  Our dinner was scheduled for 8:00 and she called to assure them we were on our way.  We pulled up in front of the hotel but had to unload into traffic, never an ideal situation, but managed to get everyone safely off the bus and into the hotel.  The poor little bellhop almost fell over when he saw the amount of luggage.  These guys really earn their keep as well as Left Brain who has to crawl into the belly of the bus and pull them out.  Then Left Brain took off in search of a parking spot for the night and they went into the dinner.  I waited until the last of the luggage was taken inside and stood on the street for quite a while watching for him to return until I finally went in to start eating.  This probably sounds cold, but we hadn’t eaten since breakfast and my fast for Yom Kippur starts tonight so I wanted to get filled up well to carry me through and it may take them a long while to find parking.  He returned about 45 minutes later to eat and rest for the night.  Supper was wonderful with a very tasty salad and bread and then a course of roast chicken, mashed potatoes and asparagus.  But the dessert was just delightful.  I had to go get my camera to take a photo of it.  It was as artistic as it was tasty.  Ah.

Our room is spacious and beautiful but internet was too expensive, so I wrote about our adventures and waited to post them until the next stop.  It feels wrong not to be in a synagogue and I’m sure there are some nearby but I need to take the first tour to get to the second part of the day and was not able to stay back alone.

Saturday:  Oct 8th

We departed early for a city tour with a step on guide.  He provided more facts and figures than I could possibly ever remember as we learned about downtown New York.

Then we went to Pier 17 where I walked about in the sunshine and had a chair massage in the food court area.  It was longer than I would have liked to spend there and wished I had opted to spend the time in the bus with Left Brain reading.  Then we were off for a harbor cruise and although it was pleasant, I’d done it before and was again missing my time with my husband.  It’s awkward to travel alone on these trips.  Everyone is in pairs or small groups and it feels lonely being the odd person out that doesn’t fit in.  Oh well, it’s just for a day.

After dropping them at the hotel I stayed with Left Brain to park the bus and walk back to the hotel.  These walks are more interesting as you see the behind the scenes lives of the everyday worker.  We went past the horse barn where the carriage horses are stabled and we found a little corner cafĂ© with outside seating available for supper.  I had a bowl of chicken noodle soup and he had a pastrami sandwich on rye.  With a beer and soda added to that the bill was $50.  Welcome to New York.  I would have loved the margarita but when the price appears the same as the number of points, it’s a no deal.

Then we walked to the theatre to watch Sister Act and had a very enjoyable evening of music and laughter.  Then it was back to the room to unwind and pack for tomorrow’s departure.

That's it for now.  We finally got internet to allow me post although the photos seem to be in strange spots and I can't figure out how to move them, so just deal with it....okay?

Caution - this blog contains frontal nudity

October is Breast  Cancer Awareness Month so it's time to post my photo of the mammogram doll.

This was inspired by a visit to my favorite boob smasher, who is now retired.

I was wondering what my chest would look like if they stayed in that position, so just had to do a doll to show those effects.

Next stop is New York City!  Left Brain assures me he has tickets for Sister Act on Broadway and my alarm is set for an obscene time of the morning to go to the airport.

She Devil was taken to the vet this evening to get settled into her kitty condo for her part of the adventure.  Needless to say she was not pleased as she hissed and spit at the vets who came down to greet her. I wish them luck.  It feels so strange to be here tonight without her.  But on the upside I didn't have to share my yogurt tonight with anyone.

I'll be traveling with camera but no computer and will rely on using Left Brain's to write any blogs while I'm away.  It should work fine, but....just in case there's a gap during my absence, not to worry.  It either means I didn't have any internet connection or I'm having too much fun to post anything.

Now - stop being such a boob and go schedule that mammogram!

An expensive screw

Oh I figured that would get your attention!  My day started early when I woke up choking and coughing and dragged myself out to the hot tub.  After scanning the deck to make sure I didn't trip on anything furry I shuffled through the leaves in the dark to my relief.  It felt good but didn't last long as I continued to feel the need to cough and spit.

After having breakfast and getting set up for the day I headed out to the dentist for the filling where the root canal was done.  I felt so brave submitting my mouth to his services with no Novocaine or topical agents for pain control.  Knowing that there's no nerve for him to hit brings on a certain comfort.  Because the area was quite deep he explained the need to insert a screw for stability.  Between drilling and gluing it into place and covering it with the top layer, that's one screw that will never come loose.  I tried to convince him to give me one of his dental tools that would be perfect for working with clay, but no dice.  After getting the bill for the filling (almost $700) I wish I had just pocketed the tool as a souvenir.  Yikes!

Being Tuesday I headed out to meet with my young student.  She was not able to come into town today so I opted to drive the hour to her house to pick her up.  It was a beautiful Autumn day and the leaves are just dazzling right now.  After having lunch at Perkins and doing our lessons we went to the local Walmart for some supplies.  As is common with me, I needed to use the restroom and parked my cart and started to veer into the facilities.  She yelped a surprise and stopped me from entering the Men's Room.  Of course now I had a case of the giggles as I started thinking "and I'm teaching her to read".

Our course of study this month is the Salem Witch trials, which seemed appropriate since it's October.  Next month we will learn about the Titanic.  She's hungry for history and there's so much she wants to learn.  It's fun to teach someone who has such a passion to learn.  Since we tend to meet mostly in restraunts to study you can't say she's being home schooled as much as cafe schooled.

On the way home I stopped at Best Buy to learn more about some camera bodies I have my eye on as well as the PC tablets.  After talking to my computer guru he advised me to wait a month or two as there is a change in the operating system coming out.  This is the advantage of dealing with an independent sales person instead of just being pushed at the Big Box to buy whatever they are promoting that month.  Thanks La Crosse Computers!

Then I had a treat as I traveled up the valley and saw a small group of women and dogs.  So, I had to get out to talk to the ladies of Apple Valley and pet my two favorite four legged friends, Taz and Ginger.  Now my day is complete.

Feeling better

The dreaded cold has loosened it's grip and I do believe I'm going to live!  I knew things were getting better when I suddenly couldn't stand the mess around me and started doing dishes and picking up.  Odd that I hadn't noticed that before...of course when you can't stay upright and breathe you tend to let such things slide.

I really knew I was recovering when I started to wonder what I should buy with my new found prize money.  If I were a practical person I'd just figure it helped to pay for the root canal, but I'm not so inclined.  Found money is meant to be enjoyed, not used for bills.

So the list in my head began.  Do I want one of those new PC tablets or a smaller laptop instead.  Do I want another camera body or a really good point and shoot.  Oh the choices!

Why do I feel like having this free money is going to cost me much much more?

Things expected and not expected

I knew it would be coming, but I hoped to just avoid it.  Everyplace I went people were sniffling, snuffling and sneezing.  I felt myself above such nonsense and went cheerfully on my way.  Then it hit.

Why is it when you are getting ready to leave on a trip you are tapped on the shoulder to take your turn at getting the dreaded cold?  I've spent more time sleeping than your average teenager lately...just can't seem to stay awake.

Too weak to do anything I've missed Rosh Hashanah services at shul and meetings I generally enjoy.  When you can't breathe it really kills the desire to be upright and social.

Although I'd been looking forward to attending the reception at the Pump House Regional Art Center where my photograph was on display.  At the urging of my friend I reluctantly agreed to attend.  "You've got to be there!" she insisted.  "I'll be there" she assured.

So in preparation for this I took a nap (really had no choice on that, couldn't stay awake) and had a long hot bath to steam my head.  Then once dressed up in my best artsy fartsy clothes and hair done, I even added make up.  I even wore an under wire bra for the occasion.  I figured if nothing else it would keep me upright and awake.  Wanting to have this documented I called her to ask that she bring her camera.  This is where I learned she was not able to come after all.  Argh!  But I was already hopped up on DayQuil and in the car so I kept going.

If I were not in my drug induced stupor I may have been suspicious of the directors look of relief when I arrived and greetings of "I'm so glad you're here".

We assembled in the upstairs theater and while the image was projected on the large screen the writer read their piece.  It was warm and I was beginning to become very drowsy and may have actually nodded off a bit.  Then I thought I heard my name.  What do they want?  I wondered.  It wasn't until a friend of mine turned around and tapped my knee and said "get up there...you WON".

You could have knocked me over with a feather.  I was still in shock as I went forward with the writer to receive our winnings.  First prize was $1000 to be split between the photographer and the writer.  Unreal.

After taking several more naps today and as the fog is starting to clear I wondered if it was a dream or hallucination.  Nope.  The check is there.  I feel that since it was a photography prize I really need to invest it in something camera related.  But I will wait until I am fully functional to make that decision.
